A friend at work told me of a phone call he got from his young daughter on Friday. It seems she took the telephone, snuck into her bedroom, closed the door and called him. In a whispered voice she explained to him that since mother and brother were going to be gone for the evening that she and dad would be going on a date. She had dinner and the rest of the night planned out and it was obvious that she was looking forward to it. When I asked him what he was going to do my friend responded how I hoped that he would, "I guess I'm going on a date with my daughter."
My heart started hurting the moment he told me about this. I miss my daughter so much. She moved away in 2006 and is no longer a "little girl", but we had so many times together like the one mentioned above. She called me last night and I told her about my friend. Immediately she brought up a father/daughter banquet that we attended when she was still in high school. She got to dress up in a fancy dress and I wore a suit and tie. The place was filled with dads and daughters and we had a nice dinner and then the dance floor was opened up. I've never been much on dancing, but I did the best that I could. It was a wonderful memory and one that I will always cherish.
If you have a daughter then be sure to spend some time with her. Take her out on a date. Don't be afraid to let her know that you care for her. Trust me, they grow up fast and one day she will be gone.
